Friday 19th July will be a non uniform day

Welcome to the year 5 page. This year the teachers are Mrs Lynch (5L) and Miss Peet (5P). Our teaching assistant is Mrs Farren. We have lots of exciting opportunities planned with lots of amazing learning experiences. We very much look forward to a successful year with all of the children in Year 5.

For English and Maths we will be following the national curriculum for Year 5.

Our Topics for the year are listed below:

Autumn 1 – Off with her Head

Travel back in time to the 1500s and meet the terrifying Tudors, a domineering dynasty that changed our history. Discover an opulent court where dancing and singing goes hand in hand with swift falls from favour - and even swifter falling of heads!!

Autumn 2 – Alchemy Island

It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island. We will be learning about gold and the ancient art of alchemy. We will be reading maps to learn more about the island and composing a stunning sound track to bring the mysterious landscape to life.

Spring 1 – Firedamp and Davy Lamps

Descend into the depths of Britain’s coal mines and discover how coal miners brought the precious coal up to the surface that was needed to power industry.

Spring 2 – Stargazers

In this exciting topic we will learn all about the solar system. We will become experts on the planets, stars, moons and satellites of our solar system and develop our understanding of how we orbit the sun and the moon orbits us. To promote our learning even further we will be going on a trip to a Space Centre and we will take part in lots of Science experiments.

Summer 1 – Peasants, Princes and Pestilence

Flee your fields, close your doors and pull up the drawbridge: the dreaded and deathly ‘Great Pestilence’ is here! This half term, we travel back through the dark and deadly world of 14th century Britain and read and write historical accounts, poems and tales and discover the grotesque effects of bugs and bacteria on the human body.

Summer 2 – Scream Machine

In this topic we will learn about the science behind roller coasters and write poems that are shaped as a loop the loop. You will design your own theme park and show your ideas on a digital map. We will carry out investigations into cam mechanisms, pendulums and pulleys and build our own prototypes.
